LIVE 24/7
The student-run voice of Howard University — one of America's most historically important HBCUs — brings hip hop, R&B, jazz, and the cultural conversations that matter most to Black America from Washington DC's historic Shaw neighborhood. Young, bold, and connected to a century of excellence.
HU Radio is the student-operated radio station of Howard University, Washington DC's historically Black university and one of the most academically distinguished HBCUs in the United States. Founded in 1867, Howard has educated generations of Black leaders, artists, intellectuals, and professionals, and HU Radio carries that legacy into the airwaves — providing a platform for student voices while reflecting the musical and cultural life of an institution that sits at the heart of Black American intellectual and artistic tradition.
The programming reflects Howard's vibrant student culture — hip hop, R&B, soul, jazz, and the full spectrum of Black musical expression feature alongside talk programming, news commentary, and student-produced shows that tackle the issues most relevant to the Howard community. The station is also a training ground for students pursuing careers in media, so the presenting is always energetic, opinionated, and genuinely student-driven.
HU Radio serves the Howard University community primarily — students, faculty, alumni, and the broader DC community who want to stay connected to the energy and culture of this remarkable institution. It is also followed by supporters of HBCU culture nationwide who value what Howard represents in American educational and cultural history.
Howard University has educated some of the most important figures in American history — from Thurgood Marshall to Toni Morrison to Kamala Harris — and its radio station participates in that tradition of developing exceptional Black talent and amplifying Black voices. HBCU college radio stations have historically been among the most important platforms for discovering and promoting Black music and culture, and HU Radio continues that tradition in the age of internet streaming.
